Maintaining Garage Door Springs

Garage door extension springs play an important role in raising and lowering your door. They counterbalance the weight of the door under extreme tension. Because they are tightly wound, they are extremely dangerous to replace on your own, but you can perform regular inspections and maintenance to keep your system healthy.

  • Inspect the springs for wear, coil separation, and stretched-out springs. Observe the door: A damaged spring may cause the door to appear crooked or even stop during the open or close cycle.
  • Prevent squeaky springs and rust with regular lubrication. The right weather stripping can also prolong the life of your springs by keeping out unwanted water and dirt.
  • As a rule of thumb, if one spring needs to be replaced, it's likely the other isn't far behind. Replacing both springs at the same time will prevent unbalanced spring tension, which could lead to more problems in the future.
